Rio Hondo, Cameron County,
Texas

Back in 1910 land developers sponsored a contest to name the townsite and the Spanish
version of the name "deep river" was selected. In 1927 the town was
Incorporated.
Of interest aside from the beautiful year round weather and the excellent food to be found in Rio Hondo is the lift-span bridge, one of only two in Texas. Built in 1953 it allows large boats and barges to make their way to the port in Harlingen.
Correction and acknowledgment: We mistakenly had Rio Hondo listed as being in Willacy County. Based on the following feedback we made our correction. This is the feedback we received:
Hi y'all,
I do believe that Rio Hondo, TX is in Cameron County, not Willacy County,
as your site suggests.
Bye now,

Thanks for the correction, Dorothy
