Texas, the second largest state in the US with 268,601square miles has 254 counties. The largest - Brewster County - stretches over an area of 6,169 square miles. About five percent of the Texas counties have a population of less then 1000 people and twenty percent a population of less that 5,000. Texas is divided into six regions:  East Texas (the Piney Woods), North Central Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex and North Texas), South Texas (San Antonio south to Mexico and the Gulf Coast), the Panhandle, Central Texas (the Hill Country including the state capital, Austin) and West Texas (the Big Bend Area).

From "tejas", a sixteenth century Spanish rendering of a Caddo Native American word meaning "friends".
