Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge
Alamo, Texas
The
refuge, thanks to the Rio Grande Valley's convergence of two major flyways,
Central and Mississippi, provides an ideal habitat for an amazing diversity of
bird species, many of which are unique to this area and not to be found in other
parts of the United States or Mexico. Pick up a checklist of well over 370 bird
species, available at the Visitors Center
(Tel 956-787-7861).
There you also find maps and brochures about the areas wildlife. Three
nature trails can be explored. The trails are open from sunrise to sunset.
Directions: Go south on FM 907 to US 281 (about 7 miles), turn east for approximately 1/4 mile to the entrance. Opening hours: weekdays from 8 am to 4:30 pm, weekends from 9 am to 4:40 pm.
