Seven
miles south of Harlingen on Expressway 83 is the town of San Benito,
formerly named Diaz, after the Mexican President and also known as the
town of the Resacas. In this location in the prehistoric delta of the
Rio Grande River, an oddity of nature where the water level is higher
than the land along the banks, are many of these small artificial lakes
which were once river beds. There are many sightseeing Resaca Drives
which are scenic and interesting. Many of them are surrounded by homes
and some of the homes have these lakes right in their front yards. Some
of the houses are so situated that persons may fish from the porch of
the home. In this vicinity are quaint, thatched-roofed "south of
the border" habitations. San Benito is also a bird watchers paradise and
a fun place to visit any time of the year due to its hay rides, offered
every weekend....I did it, it's a blast!!
